The scene was slowly built in the week leading up to the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland and confirmation arrived on Wednesday: Valentino Rossi was to ride at Sachsenring. After four races out of action the World Champion was met by an excited group of fans and media on Thursday, with the pre-event press conference reuniting the Italian with his team-mate, rival and current Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa, Casey Stoner and Alex de Angelis, who was making his return to MotoGP as a substitute rider on the Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team.

The action commenced on Friday afternoon and it was Pedrosa who was the quickest to settle in the opening practice session, whilst the following morning in FP2 Lorenzo was on the pace, with Rossi an impressive third.

Later on Saturday there followed an eventful qualifying session which was red flagged after 35 minutes when Lorenzo's M1 caught fire, after it started spitting oil onto the track. The affected track surface led to a crash for Ben Spies and Randy de Puniet, with the Frenchman escaping serious injury despite hitting Spies’ bike. De Angelis also had a fall in a separate incident, in a session that was eventually topped by Lorenzo, who took his fourth successive pole.

Race day on Sunday started as a wet affair for the 125cc class, but as the track rapidly dried out during the race Marc Marquez prevailed to take his fifth straight win of the campaign, following a late crash for title rival Pol Espargaro. In the Moto2 Contest Championship leader Toni Elias mounted a fantastic comeback after dropping to 11th to win his third race of the campaign.

As had been the case in qualifying the MotoGP race turned out to be a chaotic affair, with a crash involving De Puniet, Aleix Espargaró and Álvaro Bautista bringing out the red flag on lap nine. Unfortunately for the Frenchman the result was a fractured tibia and fibula in his left leg.

When a condensed 21-lap race was restarted it was Pedrosa who took victory with a masterful ride, his second win of the campaign. Maintaining his record of finishing in the top two at every race so far in 2010 Lorenzo's Championship lead remained healthy, with Stoner taking his third consecutive podium finish. A superb comeback by Rossi was capped with fourth, having battled with Stoner to the last corner for third.

As always the Paddock Girls added a touch of glamour to Pit Lane, whilst the OnBoard action was supplemented by the introduction of the new Gyroscopic Camera, offering an amazing new point of view from the bike!
